Work from photographs
Working from photographs allows me to create in the studio. Sometimes I work from black and white photos so as to be more creative with color, other times I stay more true to nature. It all depends on the outcome I am looking to achieve. I sometimes make notes and sketch from nature and later work these into a painting. For me, it is important to have a reference photo, drawing or notes as a place to start. Many times the work will take on a life of its own as I get further along with it. What I mean is if something looks like it is working, I may just follow through with it and allow the work to develop in ways I did not plan. Remaining open to what is happening is important to my art.
